artist statement

My body of work encompasses painting, mixed media and photography as I explore themes of dichotomy and unity, fluctuating between precision and abandon as the right and left hemispheres of my brain negotiate a truce and find peaceful coexistence through the creation of art.

I am intrigued by the simplicity and intrinsic beauty of common objects.  As an introvert, my work speaks on my behalf as I communicate through a variety of mediums, painting with acrylics and creating mixed media installations with spray foam, PVC, wire, brass fittings and other construction materials.

Influenced by the immersive nature of Helen Frankenthaler’s color field paintings, the energy of Gerhard Richter’s Abstraktes Bild works, and the diverse artistic portfolio of Sterling Ruby, I channel their work as I compulsively create, harnessing the entropic forces that manifest in my mind.

Through painting, I attempt to unite the dichotomous energies of urban environments and natural escapes, creating unique abstractions through the use of brush work and squeegees.  My most recent body of work, WE ARE ALL THE SAME UNDER THE SURFACE, eschews divisive dialog in an attempt to convey a sense of shared humanity through the artistic manipulation of construction materials.  Future work will explore the reconfiguration of these materials into sculptural hanging objects and gestural artworks.
